I played Axiom Verge, it was fine. I expected a little more since people talk about it so highly. Maybe I just don't like Metroid games as much as Castlevania games.

Yes. Best DKC IMO. Super good. Not a game for your daughter though; it can be tough
I only get to get through like one world per weekend but I'm really enjoying this. The bosses are tough, I mean so far, given I'm only at world 3

My daughter will play a few minutes as Funky Kong after I have a session before she switches to another game, so that's also pretty cool, a little exposure to some more complex controls than she's using in other games

Oh yeah and she 100% pretends she doesn't understand any letters when we make any attempts to educate her but when I finish a level and only got the K she goes "you forgot O N G"

Kid I didn't forget 'em, the game is tough and I'm on a clock before you wear thin of patience watching me try again. And quit lying to me when you say you don't know any letters come on

In that case, I think you're okay. Whoever laid all these broken pipelines was a villain, but that was in some other game. You cleaned up the environment.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is alright so far. Reminder that I'm super slow through games these days so I'm barely into it so far. But it feels like Color Splash nudged in the direction of the original

There's a mechanic analogous to painting the world, the world has holes in it you have to repair with confetti that you're constantly collecting. I've run out of confetti a couple times and that's super annoying. But I haven't run out much, and you get tons from every fight in addition to it being all over the map, so usually it's not something I'm thinking about at all

Combat doesn't have anything analogous to the cards you have to paint. Phew

You collect items, but they break. They last a few combats. Well, I've only gotten one so far. But anyway items felt awesome in the original, so it's cool to have them back in some capacity

Combat is on this 2d grid where you have to do some puzzle under time pressure to get full damage against things. You fight a ton of enemies at once and have to line them up so you can hit 4 in a row with a jump or 4 in a group with a hammer. It's themed as a 1.5x damage bonus for a perfect lineup, but the reality is the only way to kill them in one shot is with the bonus, and imperfect combat is punished hard. You can easily take half damage in a single random encounter if you fail the timer puzzle and there isn't a ton of healing

I don't know if you get a companion to fight with, I haven't gotten one yet if you do. That was another awesome thing about the first

You also don't get to see how many HP the enemies have left. I guess it's not too relevant because you're supposed to be trying to perfect every combat

I guess I'd say it's way better than Color Splash so far, and in the direction of the original, but it's closer to color splash than the original

I have also just started Paper Mario, but I'm not far enough in to have different observations. I'm assuming running out of confetti will eventually matter, but here in the early game you can get more really easily.

Are they as hard as the DKCR ones? Those were a hoot to get better at, like a fair kaizo for busy people.

I got to the first boss, which I thought would clarify why the combat works as it is, but instead it uses the combat system in a different bizarre way that I don't find very fun or satisfying. There was some cool stuff about the first boss but it was overall a low point for me

And then right after the first boss I got some permanent upgrades and suddenly everything is much better? +10 seconds to the timed puzzle in each combat is great, but then there's an item that gives you 10HP every combat and one that makes your blocks actually effective and suddenly getting perfect in every combat isn't necessary and I feel free to just do my best with the combat puzzle lineup

Oh and you get a companion which is awesome, but you don't get to control him, so he's still fun but not as fun as the original. And then he gets lost all the time so you only get him a little bit of the time? I don't get so many of these decisions

But I am enjoying myself. That's what matters

It sounds like I'm about where you are at this point, as my last thirty minutes of gameplay were mostly spent looking for an amnesiac Bob-Omb that keeps wandering off.

It's fun. I feel weird about going to the area where you train to get better at the puzzle that's at the heart of combat, but the game does go a lot faster if you take some time to get good at that.
